Introduction

In the Individual Medley, you swim Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle, in that order.

It is essential to master common skills to swim the 4 different strokes in a row.

Butterfly

・   In Butterfly, keep your body flat and streamlined to minimize drag as long as possible.

・   Move your arm backward in coordination with the body's upward motion. And when your shoulders come above the surface, quickly bring your arms low and forward.

・   Try to rest in the water while moving your arms.

Backstroke

・   In Backstroke, the basic movement is to rotate with your head, back and hips on an axis.

・   Maintain front and back balance and extend your body to minimize drag.

・   Using the arm in the water as leverage, quickly move the other arm above the surface forward.

Breaststroke

・   In Breaststroke, keep your streamlined body position as long as possible to minimize drag.

・   Move your arms inward, as the body goes up. Thrust your hands forward, after you finish breathing.

・   Maximize propulsion by kicking after extending your arms.

Freestyle

・   Freestyle is the same as Backstroke. Maintain balance and a streamlined position to minimize drag.

・   Using the arm in the water as leverage, quickly extend the other arm after inserting it into the water to create propulsion.

・   Before you try the Individual Medley, you need to be able to swim Freestyle the same distance comfortably to build up endurance.
